Before the cafés fill with people and the cobblestone streets become busy, the neighbourhood feels almost cinematic. Morning light reflects off the historic stone buildings, the river is quiet, and there’s nowhere you need to be except beside the person you came with. It’s one of my favourite places in the city for couples who want photographs that feel natural, timeless, and true to who they are.

As a Montreal couples photographer, I’ve found that the best sessions rarely begin with a camera. They begin with coffee, conversation, and giving yourselves permission to spend a morning together without feeling rushed.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Old Port as a Montreal Couples Photographer

There are plenty of beautiful places for a couples session in Montreal, but I find myself returning to the Old Port again and again.

Between the historic architecture, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and cafés tucked into quiet corners, every turn offers something different. It’s one of the few places in Montreal where a single walk can create a gallery with so much variety.

One of my favourite parts of photographing in the Old Port is designing a route that feels effortless. We begin where the light is at its best, move naturally through the neighbourhood, and leave enough room for the moments that can’t be planned.

A Morning in the Old Port

Every session begins with a thoughtful plan. I consider the light, the timing, and the locations long before we meet. That preparation creates the freedom to slow down once we’re together, so the experience never feels rushed or overly directed.

For this session, we met at Café Olimpico while the city was still quiet. Coffee in hand, we wandered through the Old Port…we stopped in front of Bonsecours Market, where an empty square turned into an impromptu dance. A little farther along, the Ferris wheel became the perfect place to pause for a quick kiss before we continued toward the Clock Tower, taking in the river and the slower rhythm of the waterfront.

Nothing about the morning felt forced. Every stop had been thoughtfully chosen, but what happened within those spaces was entirely their own. That’s the balance I’m always looking for—creating enough structure that you never have to think about where to go next, while leaving plenty of room for genuine moments to happen naturally.

A Montreal Couples Photographer’s Approach to a Relaxed Session

The couples who leave saying, “That was actually so much fun,” usually have one thing in common. They aren’t worried about doing everything perfectly.

They wear something they feel comfortable and confident in, leave room to slow down, and aren’t afraid to take a small detour if the light is beautiful or a quiet street catches our attention.
